Credit ratings – excellent, good, fair, poor – Its meaning to employers

Saturday, January 31st, 2009

Ever thought your credit rating was just the number financial institutions use to determine your credit worthiness? While it is used for this particular purpose, your credit rating is also like a report card that any institution wishing to get a clearer picture of your character can review, sometimes with your knowledge and sometimes without. Often you surrender permission to view your credit history simply by initiating an action like requesting internet service, and sometimes, it’s hidden in the fine print most of us fail to read.
One of the top reasons to protect your credit rating that stands out in my mind – besides the obvious financial reasons – is that potential employers often look to see whether or not you have poor, good, or excellent credit. Larger companies, especially, want to see how you handle your personal finances. “My credit score isn’t a reflection of what kind of person I am!” you might say, and that’s probably true, but it is a somewhat accurate reflection a person’s responsibility level and whether one might exhibit a laisse-fare approach to money and life. Recent college grads and career changers should always check their credit ratings as part of their preparation for the job hunt. Nobody wants an unwelcome surprise to pop up after they interview for a dream job.
The good thing about employer credit rating screenings, if anything, is that potential employers must first notify you and gain permission to check your credit. This notification usually won’t be as discreet as the one you receive in conjunction with some of the other circumstances that require a check of your credit rating. It will probably part of a pre employment screening contract or, if you’re lucky, a verbal notification. Your current employer also has permission to check your credit, but you will never be terminated by a current employer for having a poor credit rating.
